Police union releases ad accusing mayoral hopeful Nithya Raman of endangering schoolchildren
The Los Angeles Police Protective League aired a 30-second advertisement criticizing mayoral candidate Nithya Raman for her stance on homeless encampments near schools.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League launched a 30-second television ad that highlights Nithya Raman’s previous comments on the city’s 500-foot anti-camping buffer around schools. The commercial features a child walking past homeless tents, mentioning needles and fear, while Raman’s statements are heard in the background. The union alleges Raman has voted more than 75 times against prohibiting encampments near schools, parks, daycares and other sensitive areas.
Raman maintains that simply relocating tents will not address the root causes of homelessness and calls for additional shelter and housing resources. The ad also references a $62.6 million housing initiative she championed, which had placed only three households into permanent homes by late June. Raman’s campaign did not reply to inquiries. The ad is part of the broader mayoral race in Los Angeles.
Why it matters
The ad frames homelessness policy as a school-safety issue, influencing voter perception in a key mayoral contest.
