Police use citywide video network to trace looters after Paris sports store raid

After a sports store in Paris was looted, investigators employed video footage from public and transport cameras to follow the suspects.

A group of young people in black fled the scene of a sports store robbery in Paris carrying bags of merchandise. Bruno, a video-expert investigator at the Centre de coopération opérationnelle de la sécurité, examined the footage. By linking images from municipal surveillance, RATP and SNCF cameras, police were able to map the suspects' movements, sometimes tracking them to their homes.

Why it matters

It shows how extensive video surveillance can be leveraged to quickly identify and locate looters during civil unrest.
