Police watchdog ends misconduct probe into officer who shot Chris Kaba

On 5 September 2022, Metropolitan Police firearms officer Martyn Blake shot and killed 24-year-old Chris Kaba after the latter attempted to drive through police-blocked vehicles in Streatham. Blake was tried for murder at the Old Bailey and acquitted by a jury in 2024. Following the criminal trial, the Independent Office for Police Conduct launched a misconduct investigation in April 2025, which was paused in January and ultimately dropped in April, with the agency invoking discretionary powers after recent legal changes to police use of force.

The IOPC described the case as having significant public interest, especially among black communities. Critics argue the lengthy process subjected Blake to undue hardship despite his acquittal. The decision to close the probe marks the final official clearance of Blake in connection with the shooting.
