Police wound suspect while arresting man accused of kidnapping 10-year-old girl
Police shot and detained Yuvraj Tharu after he fled a search for the kidnapper of a 10-year-old girl, who was rescued unharmed after about 40 hours.
Police arrested Yuvraj Tharu, also known as Bishal, after a multi-day manhunt for the kidnapper of a 10-year-old girl in Rupandehi district. Tharu was discovered concealed in a paddy field in Darkhasawa on Saturday night and was shot in the leg when he attacked officers with stones and tried to escape. The girl had been taken from her home while she slept on Wednesday night; she was found unharmed in a forest near Kanchhibazar about 40 hours later.
Authorities mobilized around 150 officers, and deputy superintendent Nishant Srivastava said Tharu had a pattern of threatening women in the village. District police chief Janak Shahi confirmed Tharu is being treated at Lumbini Provincial Hospital. Preliminary investigation suggests the abduction was intended for sexual assault, and Tharu allegedly consumed large amounts of alcohol at the time.
