Polish 2027 budget faces record deficit and mounting debt concerns

Poland's draft 2027 budget, approved by the government and now before the Sejm, projects a historic deficit exceeding 280 billion zloty and warns of a continuing rise in public debt.

Jerzy Karwelis discussed the 2027 Polish budget with economist Ireneusz Jabłoński on a YouTube channel, noting that the government signed off on the draft at the end of September and it is now under parliamentary review. Constitutionally, the final bill must reach the Sejm by the end of the month and be presented to the president within four months. The proposal forecasts state outlays far above revenue, creating a deficit of more than 280 billion zloty, the largest on record, and a corresponding surge in public debt.

Finance Minister Andrzej Domański said all taxpayer-funded social schemes, such as 800 plus and in-vitro financing, will be maintained. Jabłoński warned that the practice of shifting spending into earmarked funds and the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego obscures the true size of the deficit, a method not aligned with EU standards. He projected debt-service payments could hit 107 billion zloty, surpassing previous years, and cautioned that both politicians and voters seem unwilling to acknowledge the looming fiscal crisis.

Why it matters

Poland's looming budget deficit threatens fiscal stability and could affect EU economic assessments.
