Polish climate minister warns of private price hikes as pellet costs surge
Climate and Environment Minister Hennig-Kloska said private firms are inflating pellet prices, which could reach several thousand złoty per tonne and make heating a typical home extremely expensive.
In a broadcast with RMF FM, Tomasz Terlikowski highlighted a forecast that pellet fuel might rise to 4 000 zł per tonne, potentially costing a household up to 15-20 000 zł for a heating season. Minister Hennig-Kloska responded that she has observed prices as low as 1 500 zł and accused private firms of using fear tactics to push higher prices. She emphasized that recent wood price stability offers no economic justification for such increases and suggested that profit-driven actors are exploiting the market.
The minister pointed out that the issue stems more from large-scale heat producers and the energy sector than from private consumption. She proposed launching an agropellet market aimed at district heating, acknowledging it would not solve household cost problems. Unofficial figures discussed at a Ministry of Energy meeting indicated that a very cold winter could push pellet prices above 3 000 zł, with a worst-case scenario of 4-5 000 zł per tonne, though the source of these numbers was not disclosed.
