Polish coalition pushes to bring NBP chief Glapiński before State Tribunal
The Sejm’s Constitutional Accountability Commission finished hearing witnesses on a motion to refer NBP President Adam Glapiński to the State Tribunal, with a report due Friday.
In March 2024, a group of coalition MPs filed a preliminary request to bring National Bank of Poland President Adam Glapiński before the State Tribunal, alleging constitutional violations including indirect financing of the budget deficit during the 2020-21 asset-purchase operation and failure to obtain proper authorization from the Monetary Policy Council. The Sejm’s Commission of Constitutional Accountability concluded its witness hearings on Tuesday and will issue a report on Friday.
Former finance minister Andrzej Kosztowniak, speaking to DoRzeczy.pl, called the charges “grotesque” and purely political, pointing out that the NBP enjoys high ratings from the European Central Bank, World Bank and IMF and holds about 650 tonnes of gold. He also argued that economic shocks such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine would affect inflation regardless of who leads the bank. Kosztowniak suggested the move may aim to weaken a constitutional body and facilitate a covert push toward euro adoption.
Why it matters
The case could reshape Poland’s central bank independence and influence the country’s euro adoption debate.
