Polish commentators warn EU carbon trading scheme will cripple national economy
After Ursula von der Leyen’s European Parliament address, Polish analyst Łukasz Warzecha highlighted the lack of discussion on the EU ETS and warned that the upcoming ETS 2 could heavily raise energy costs in Poland.
Łukasz Warzecha reported on Ursula von der Leyen’s 16 September address to the European Parliament, emphasizing that the speech skipped over the EU emissions-trading system (ETS). He pointed to a warning from Marcin Lasocki, vice-president of the Polish Energy Group, that the ETS already represents a significant portion of energy costs for Polish enterprises. Warzecha stressed that the planned rollout of ETS 2 starting in 2028 will likely push fuel, goods and service prices higher, deepening the economic strain.
While von der Leyen discussed broader climate initiatives such as electrification and renewable energy, she did not mention ETS reforms. According to Warzecha, members of the European People’s Party and other Polish lawmakers view the ETS as an unsustainable burden and are seeking ways to mitigate its impact.
