Polish consumers deepen use of deposit-return scheme, new poll shows

A recent survey by the Krajowy System Kaucyjny Zwrotka finds that 75% of respondents regularly return containers and plan to keep doing so, up from 62% earlier this year.

According to Aleksander Traple, president of the Krajowy System Kaucyjny Zwrotka, the deposit-return scheme has become a routine part of daily shopping for Polish consumers. The latest poll shows 75% of respondents already return containers and intend to continue, compared with 62% in the April survey. Those who had not yet participated fell from 19% to 6%.

Around 77% now link returns to purchases at the same retailer, and 65% say they throw deposit-eligible items in regular waste less often. Positive attitudes also grew, with 45% rating the system favorably and 59% deeming it necessary. The study highlights that 83% prefer automated return points, though some report occasional full or malfunctioning machines.
