Polish farmers and food industry workers plan Warsaw protest over new sugar tax hikes

After the Sejm approved higher fiscal charges, including a rise in the sugar tax, the NSZZ Rolników Indywidualnych "Solidarność" announced a demonstration in Warsaw.

During its 67th session, the Sejm voted to add new fiscal burdens, with the sugar tax slated to climb significantly. The NSZZ Rolników Indywidualnych "Solidarność" together with the Sekretariat Przemysłu Spożywczego i Rolnictwa NSZZ "Solidarność" responded by scheduling a protest in Warsaw for Tuesday. Tomasz Obszański, the union’s chair, said roughly 200 people are expected, ranging from sugar beet farmers to fruit growers and workers in processing facilities.

The rally will begin at 11:00 at the Wincenty Witos monument on Plac Trzech Krzyży and continue until 14:00. Protesters argue that higher beverage prices could curb sales, reduce demand for sugar, fruits and other farm inputs, and ultimately threaten jobs throughout the supply chain.

Why it matters

The protest highlights how tax policy on sugary drinks may affect farmers, food processors and consumers across Poland.
