Polish fighters intercept Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane near Ustka

Polish jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft 40 km north of Ustka, prompting the defence minister to expand air-space protection measures.

Polish air force units intercepted a Russian Ilyushin-20 reconnaissance aircraft on Thursday, locating it 40 km north of the coastal town of Ustka. The plane was flying without active identification devices, raising concerns for civilian aviation safety. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that, in response to this and other recent Russian provocations, Poland will increase the scope of its air-space defence, deploying additional F-16 fighters and helicopters.

He emphasized that the nature of Russian actions has evolved, endangering areas once considered secure, and that Poland continues to monitor the eastern border closely. This is the second such interception this week, after a similar encounter on Monday near Łeba, where the aircraft was also identified over international waters. Such incidents are handled according to one outlet NATO procedures, including possible communication and escort of the unidentified aircraft out of Polish responsibility zones.
