Polish foreign minister discusses West Bank convoy attack with Israeli counterpart

Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski spoke with Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar after illegal Israeli settlers attacked a diplomatic convoy on the West Bank, causing no injuries.

A convoy traveling on the West Bank was assaulted by Israeli settlers, who surrounded the vehicles and shattered a window, though none of the diplomats from Poland, France or Belgium were harmed. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via spokesperson Maciej Wewiór, called for immediate clarification from Israel. Subsequently, foreign minister Radosław Sikorski met Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar to address the assault and discuss Israel’s role as an occupying authority under international law.

Israeli officials informed Sikorski of police operations and detentions following the incident. The discussion also touched on a British-initiated joint stance of twelve countries regarding trade restrictions on products from illegal settlements, as well as broader issues such as Russian support for Iran and security concerns in the region. Both ministers reiterated that Poland remains a safe and welcoming destination for visitors, noting rising Israeli tourism.

Why it matters

The talks highlight diplomatic tension over settler violence and reinforce Poland's demand for accountability under international law.
