Polish Foreign Minister Holds Introductory UN Talk with Belarusian Counterpart, Signals Openness to Better Ties

During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said his meeting with Belarusian Foreign Minister Ryżenkow was a preliminary, introductory dialogue conducted in a neutral setting. He urged the Belarusian side to prevent Russia from using Belarusian territory for drone and missile flights and highlighted recent Minsk actions, including the release of several political detainees such as journalist Andrzej Poczobut.

Sikorski also revealed plans to inaugurate a new building for the Polish embassy in Minsk. Emphasising Poland's willingness to be the first to consent to improved ties, he clarified that Poland recognises states, not governments, and likened any future normalisation to a snowdrop that may blossom under suitable conditions. The following day, the Polish delegation, led by President Karol Nawrocki, will present Warsaw's stance on Russia's aggression against Ukraine at a UN Security Council debate. The UN session's theme focuses on restoring trust and managing transformation.
