Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun faces six charges including hospital interference

Prosecutors in Wrocław presented six accusations against MEP Grzegorz Braun, four of which relate to a disputed intervention at an Oleśnica hospital in April 2025.

On Monday, Wrocław prosecutors made a sixth effort to lay six charges against European Parliament member Grzegorz Braun, who complied with the summons. Four of the charges concern his April 2025 attempt, together with fellow lawmaker Roman Fritz, to halt an abortion at the Oleśnica hospital by entering the ward and confining the physician, Gizela Jagielska, in an administrative room, prompting police intervention. The remaining accusations involve vandalising a photo exhibition about the Equality March in Opole’s market square and publishing a YouTube video classified by investigators as racist and antisemitic.

Braun’s legal representative, Magdalena Leszczyńska, raised objections to the conduct of the proceedings, noting Braun’s denial of the alleged acts and his refusal to sign any documents. The European Parliament stripped Braun of immunity in November 2025, and Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has requested the European Parliament’s speaker, Robert Metsola, to approve his detention and forced appearance.

Why it matters

The case tests the limits of parliamentary immunity and highlights tensions over abortion rights and hate speech in Poland.
