Polish military police detain dual-citizen soldier suspected of spying at Łódź medical academy

Military police arrested a soldier holding Polish and Ukrainian passports on suspicion of espionage while attending a reserve officer course at the Military Medical Academy in Łódź; he remains in custody pending a court ruling.

On Friday, the Polish Military Police, following orders from the Łódź-Polesie District Prosecutor’s Office, detained a participant in a reserve officer training program at the Military Medical Academy in Łódź. The individual, who possesses both Polish and Ukrainian citizenship, was found carrying multiple mobile phones, assorted documents, official stamps, as well as a sizable stash of cash and gold. Officials have not disclosed the exact charges, but unofficial reports indicate an espionage investigation led by the Military Counter-Intelligence Service.

The detainee, named Vasilij, is currently held in custody, and a court session scheduled for Monday will determine his further legal status. The academy, re-opened in July 2026 after the former Military Centre for Medical Training was dissolved, continues to train medical personnel for the armed forces.

Why it matters

The arrest highlights potential foreign intelligence activity within Poland's military training institutions.
