Polish officials clash over school attack rumors as police detain dozens
Recent school knife attacks led police to detain 76 people and log 231 incidents, while politicians disputed the government's handling of unverified online challenge claims.
In the wake of two violent school incidents - a 19-year-old attacker in Ostrołęka wounding nine and a 15-year-old in Leszczydole-Nowiny killing a 37-year-old employee and injuring a teacher and director - police inspected schools nationwide, detaining 76 individuals and recording 231 events linked to possible offenses. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka called on teachers to reassure pupils, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly mentioned an alleged internet “challenge” despite no evidence.
Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski warned against spreading unverified information. Journalists Dorota Gawryluk and Jan Wróbel criticised the premier for giving attention to the rumors, suggesting it could heighten public fear.
