Polish parliament passes multiple tax hikes with coalition backing
The Sejm approved a series of new tax measures, supported by the governing coalition and Law and Justice, while PiS largely abstained.
In the 67th sitting of the Sejm, lawmakers passed a bundle of tax-raising statutes, marking an unprecedented number of unfavorable fiscal changes in a single session. The ruling coalition, aided by Law and Justice, secured passage of measures that add new income tax brackets, raise the solidarity contribution for high earners, and increase VAT on certain beverages. Opposition parties displayed varied responses: PiS largely abstained, Rozwój Plus voted against most proposals, and Confederation split its votes.
The package also removed the internet tax exemption, imposed stricter limits on family foundations, and raised excise duties on alcohol. Critics argue the reforms are driven by budgetary pressures rather than public-health concerns.
Why it matters
The new taxes will affect household incomes and business costs, influencing Poland's fiscal outlook.
