Polish President Nawrocki Sends New NBP Board Appointment Decree to Tusk for Signature

President Karol Nawrocki will resend a decree naming four members of the National Bank of Poland’s board to Prime Minister Donald Tusk for countersignature, officials said.

President Karol Nawrocki confirmed he will once again submit a decree appointing four individuals to the board of the Narodowy Bank Polski to Prime Minister Donald Tusk for the mandatory countersignature. The announcement came from government chief of staff Paweł Szefernaker, who cautioned that the government's postponement could cause both the bank’s board and its president to lose constitutional independence. He argued the administration is trying to sidestep constitutional safeguards that protect the tenure and personal independence of the central bank’s top officials, drawing a parallel with recent efforts to influence the Constitutional Tribunal.

Szefernaker framed the action as part of a broader strategy to seize control over regulatory bodies after earlier moves against the judiciary. He added that the president’s proposal includes candidates with broad political support, the same names presented in February, and aims to stabilise the Polish currency and the country’s financial credibility.
