Polish President Nawrocki urges UN to enforce accountability and punish aggression

Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, President Karol Nawrocki said the gathering begins amid unprecedented difficulty, noting Poland’s status as an original UN founder. He criticized the post-World War II order for failing to embed a simple rule that every breach of law should incur responsibility and, where appropriate, a fair penalty. Nawrocki highlighted how Poland, after enduring Soviet domination and Nazi occupation, saw its wartime heroes imprisoned, tortured, and executed without redress.
He argued that the lack of accountability for those crimes set a precedent that emboldens current aggressors, citing Russia’s imperial policies as a contemporary example. The speech called on the international community to restore the principle of responsibility to ensure lasting peace and give force to the UN Charter.
