Polish SMS Alert Warns of Russian Air Strike on Ukraine, Then Cancelled

The Government Security Center sent an SMS warning about a Russian air attack on Ukraine to the Lublin region, then cancelled it before 5 a.m., stating there was no threat to Poland.

In the early hours of Sunday, the Government Security Center (RCB) triggered an emergency SMS alert to inform people in the Lublin Voivodeship about a Russian air operation targeting Ukraine. The warning, transmitted via mobile networks and relayed to Polish Radio, Telewizja Polska, the Polish Press Agency and social platforms, noted that Polish air forces were monitoring the situation. Shortly before 5 a.m., the RCB announced that the aerial threat had subsided and issued a follow-up message cancelling the alert, confirming no danger to Poland.

The agency explained that the initial dispatch was stopped once the risk vanished, meaning only a portion of the targeted population may have received the first warning. Consequently, some recipients might have received both the original alert and its cancellation, while others saw only the latter. The episode highlights the growing use of civilian warning systems in southeastern Poland amid the ongoing conflict.

Why it matters

It illustrates how the Ukraine war can trigger civilian alerts in neighboring Poland, affecting public safety communications.
