Polish State Takes Over A4 Highway, Ending Toll for Light Vehicles
The concession for the A4 stretch between Katowice and Kraków will end, and the road will be transferred to the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways, removing tolls for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
Drivers on the Katowice-Kraków corridor have long complained about high tolls, but the concession with Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska is set to expire, after which the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways will assume responsibility for the 61-kilometre stretch. The transition will be recorded in a detailed handover protocol and will involve checks of the road’s technical condition. As a result, toll booths at Brzęczkowice and Balice will be dismantled and light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes will travel toll-free.
Trucks exceeding that weight will continue to be charged through the e-TOLL system. In parallel, the agency is preparing a three-lane expansion, divided into three sections, with construction slated to begin in the early 2030s to improve capacity and safety.
Why it matters
Free tolls for most drivers will lower travel costs and could boost traffic flow on a major Polish corridor.
