Polish stores pull Halloween knives and grim costumes after school attacks

Major Polish retailers are removing Halloween items such as fake knives and violent costumes following a series of school stabbing incidents.

Three stabbing attacks at educational institutions in Warsaw, Leszczydol-Nowiny and Ostroleka have led Polish retailers to scale back their Halloween selections. Biedronka, the country’s largest grocery chain, announced it will pull items like fake knives and graphic costumes, while children’s store Smyk is removing accessories that mimic dangerous tools. Both companies said the decision was driven by worries over the impact on young people.

Police have deployed thousands of officers to schools since the incidents began. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other politicians have blamed social media, video games and a broader trend of violence for the attacks. Although Halloween is not a traditional Polish holiday, it has become popular among youth, prompting the retailers’ precautionary step.

Why it matters

The pullback shows how violent incidents can quickly affect retail offerings and public safety debates.
