Political dispute at Ohio dog park erupts into shooting, veteran seriously injured
An argument over Donald Trump at a Bainbridge, Ohio dog park escalated into a gunfight, leaving Marine veteran David Mattai seriously wounded and both men charged.
At Centerville Mills Dog Park in Bainbridge, Ohio, David Mattai encountered Emmanuel “Mike” Mathews discussing Donald Trump, prompting a heated verbal clash. The dispute intensified, leading Mattai to grab Mathews’ hair and Mathews to retrieve a.45-caliber handgun, which he used to shoot Mattai in the lower back, damaging his intestines and fracturing his spine. Mattai responded with a 9-mm pistol, firing at least four rounds that struck Mathews’ car but missed him.
Mattai underwent two surgeries, a two-week hospital stay, and months of rehabilitation, now walking with a limp and unable to return to his forklift-mechanic job. Mathews has been charged with second-degree felonious assault and plans a self-defense claim, while Mattai faces misdemeanor assault and disorderly-conduct charges. Mattai later admitted to overstating his Marine service and said the episode taught him to avoid political confrontations with strangers.
