Political violence claims dozens of lives ahead of South Africa's municipal elections
A recent report says at least 43 people have been killed in politically motivated attacks in South Africa as the country approaches municipal elections.
According to a new one outlet-cited study, political assassinations in South Africa have reached at least 43 deaths, with a total of 45 politically motivated attacks recorded. The surge outpaces the yearly figures compiled by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) since its 2015 launch. The violence primarily targets party figures, neighbourhood councillors, civil-society activists and community leaders.
Among the dead are 13 ANC members and eight MK Party affiliates, the latter led by ex-president Jacob Zuma. KwaZulu-Natal, a stronghold of the MK Party, saw the highest number of incidents, while Gauteng, home to Johannesburg’s economic hub, recorded ten attacks. The upcoming municipal elections are seen as a barometer of public discontent with the ANC over infrastructure decay, crime and corruption.
