Poll shows Alabama Senate contest tightening as Tuberville trails Jones

A new poll cited by AL.com suggests that incumbent Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville is facing an unexpectedly close race against former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama. Only 49 percent of likely voters said they would definitely or probably vote for Tuberville, while 41 percent expressed the same for Jones, a notable shift from Tuberville’s 61-percent win in 2020. The poll surveyed 601 likely voters, with 57 percent responding via a text-to-web link and the remainder online, and also measured attitudes toward school-choice initiatives, which 69 percent of respondents supported.

GOP attorney-general hopeful Katherine Robertson warned that Republicans need to mobilize heavily for the November election. The findings stand in stark contrast to the 2022 election landscape, where Democrats received just 29 percent against Governor Kay Ivey’s 67 percent. The poll’s sponsor is an education group that backs public funding for private schools, and its data suggest that Jones could gain ground by endorsing school-choice legislation.
