Poll shows Labour voters demand EU re-entry pledge from Andy Burnham

A new poll indicates that almost three-quarters of Labour supporters want Andy Burnham to commit to seeking EU membership in the party’s next manifesto.

Research by European Movement UK and Obsurvant reveals that nearly 75% of Labour voters want Andy Burnham to include a commitment to re-enter the European Union in the next party manifesto, and similar majorities appear across other parties except Reform UK. Burnham has described Brexit as a failure that has caused a decade of division. The European Movement has produced a roadmap aiming for UK accession by 2036 or sooner, backed by figures such as Michael Heseltine, Neil Kinnock and Vince Cable, and it has been shared with the prime minister.

Former prime minister Tony Blair also urged Burnham to adopt the plan in his ten-year strategy. A parliamentary debate on a petition supporting EU re-membership, backed by thousands of letters, is set for Monday.

Why it matters

The poll shows strong public pressure on Labour to make EU re-membership a central election promise.
