Poll shows Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro neck-and-neck in simulated runoff
A recent AtlasIntel/Bloomberg poll indicates President Lula and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro are virtually tied in a hypothetical runoff, with Lula holding a slight edge inside the margin of error.
An AtlasIntel poll released Wednesday surveyed 5,015 Brazilian voters from Sept. 17 to 22 and found President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro essentially dead-locked in a hypothetical runoff, with Lula at 47.7% and Bolsonaro at 47.4%, a gap that falls within the poll’s 1-point margin of error. A separate poll on Sept. 17 had shown Bolsonaro ahead 47.2% to 46.8%. In a first-round projection, Lula would obtain 45.8% of the vote, Bolsonaro 43.4%, while Renan Santos, Augusto Cury and Ronaldo Caiado would capture 4.5%, 2.1% and 1.3% respectively.
The previous poll recorded Lula at 44.1% and Bolsonaro at 41.7% for the first round. If the Oct. 4 election fails to produce a candidate with over 50% of valid votes, the top two would face each other on Oct. 25. The poll’s margin of error is one percentage point.
