Poll shows over 60% of Britons support wealth tax on ultra-rich ahead of budget

A Survation poll for Tax Justice UK finds 63% of voters favour higher taxes on individuals with assets above £10 million, alongside support for windfall levies on banks and energy firms.

Ahead of Chancellor John Healey's inaugural budget, a Survation poll commissioned by Tax Justice UK revealed that 63% of respondents want higher taxes on people holding more than £10 million in assets. The same poll showed 61% support windfall taxes on banks and 62% on energy firms, with campaigners projecting roughly £36 billion in annual revenue from these policies. Groups such as Patriotic Millionaires UK and Tax Justice UK claim the wealth tax alone could cover the £18.5 billion cost of the National Care Service and fund 90,000 social homes.

Figures like Julia Davies and Faiza Shaheen argue the tax package would alleviate the affordability crisis and demonstrate a government focused on ordinary citizens. The poll also found 71% of voters believe the government prioritises corporations over the public. Healey is set to travel to Bangkok for IMF meetings, where he will discuss global economic challenges linked to conflicts in the Middle East and Europe.

Why it matters

Public support for taxing the ultra-rich could shape upcoming fiscal policy and fund major social programmes.
