Poll shows overwhelming U.S. opposition to trans athletes on opposite-sex teams

According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, a substantial majority of U.S. adults are uneasy about transgender athletes competing on teams that do not align with their sex at birth. The sentiment cuts across political affiliations, with roughly nine out of ten conservatives and over half of progressives indicating discomfort. Both genders reported comparable opposition, and the pattern held steady across white, Hispanic, Black and Asian respondents.

Age differences emerged, as older adults showed the highest levels of unease, yet a solid majority of those aged 18 to 29 also opposed the idea. The findings arrive amid renewed debate over trans participation in sports, highlighted by recent comments from WNBA player Sophie Cunningham.
