Pope Leo XIV to revisit missionary roots in Peru and make historic Argentina stop
Pope Leo XIV will travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from Nov. 6-17, marking his longest papal trip and the first papal visit to Argentina since 1987.
From Nov. 6 to 17, Pope Leo XIV will embark on a 31,000-kilometre journey across Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, the longest trip of his pontificate. In Uruguay he will celebrate a feast day linked to the country’s patron saint at the National Shrine in Florida. The Argentine leg will include a Mass at the shrine of Our Lady of Lujan, fulfilling a pilgrimage his predecessor never completed.
Leo’s primary focus will be Peru, his former diocese, where he will arrive in Lima on Nov. 11, visit Chiclayo for a private dinner with priests, and travel to Cusco and the Amazonian city of Pucallpa to honor indigenous peoples. The tour ends with a final Mass in Callao on Nov. 16, after which he returns to the Vatican.
Why it matters
The visit gives Latin American Catholics a rare papal presence and completes a pilgrimage missed by Pope Francis.
