Pope urges bishops to heed families' struggles and address sexual morality

Pope Leo XIV asked bishops to listen to families facing hardship and to speak openly about sexuality within Christian marriage.

During the 10th anniversary meeting for the document "Amoris Laetitia," Pope Leo XIV called on bishops to pay close attention to families, especially those experiencing difficulty, isolation or perceived failure. He argued that such families raise important questions that require bold answers, particularly regarding how Christians should live out their sexuality. The Pope pointed to a growing gap between lived sexual experiences and the Church’s vision of marriage, and he identified vulnerabilities such as economic insecurity, migration, violence and loneliness.

He also stressed the challenge young people face in making a lifelong commitment. By urging clergy to address these issues directly, the Pope seeks to bridge the disconnect and offer pastoral support to struggling families.

Why it matters

The Pope’s call could shape how the Catholic Church addresses modern family and sexual issues worldwide.
