Popular prosecution urges judge to probe Moroccan warships' entry into Ceuta waters
The popular prosecution led by Iustitia Europa has asked a judge to investigate the presence of Moroccan warships in Ceuta’s territorial waters during the late-July migrant surge.
In the ongoing legal case concerning the late-July influx of migrants to Ceuta, the popular prosecution headed by Iustitia Europa has filed a petition urging the judge to examine the brief incursion of Moroccan warships into Spanish waters. The request calls for the disclosure of naval and Guardia Civil records, diplomatic exchanges with Morocco, and intelligence assessments to determine the scope and intent of the maneuver.
It also asks whether the Guardia Civil detected the vessels, when authorities were informed, and what actions were taken. The centre-right PP has joined the prosecution in demanding these investigative measures. Government spokespeople have downplayed the episode as a punctual, normal interaction between the two countries. Prosecutors argue the event could have implications for Spain’s territorial integrity and external security, citing article 590 of the Penal Code regarding unauthorized acts that might provoke foreign conflict.
Why it matters
The probe could reveal whether foreign military vessels violated Spanish sovereignty during a tense migration episode.
