Port of Aberdeen explores new ferry service to Iceland’s Seyðisfjörður

Port of Aberdeen officials are discussing a potential regular ferry route linking Aberdeen with Seyðisfjörður in eastern Iceland.

The Port of Aberdeen is evaluating a regular ferry connection to Seyðisfjörður on Iceland’s east coast as part of its plan to broaden passenger and cargo links with northern Europe. Chief executive Bob Sanguinetti expressed interest, noting the route could diversify the port’s offerings. Discussions have been held with Múlaþing mayor Dagmar Ýr Stefánsdóttir, who highlighted the need for freight traffic and said an interested operator is in preliminary talks but nothing is formalised.

The mayor also mentioned coordination with the Icelandic Tourist Board to study import-export potential and flagged the challenge of Scotland’s position outside the Schengen area. Scottish Greens MSP Kristopher Leask welcomed the idea, suggesting a possible stop in Orkney to strengthen Nordic ties. Similar regional ferry services existed until 2007, but Scotland’s only remaining international link ended in 2018.
