Portland police dog killed on final shift during shootout with murder suspect

During a pursuit of a murder suspect near Portland's Chestnut Tree Inn, gunfire broke out as the Portland Police Bureau and the US Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force tried to apprehend the man. Kylo, the bureau's K-9 on his final shift before retirement, was struck by bullets and later died at a veterinary medical center. The suspect, identified after detectives linked him to a homicide discovered earlier that day, was also hit by police fire and died at the scene.

A police procession later moved Kylo's body to the Oregon Humane’s Animal Crimes Forensic Center. This incident follows the unexpected death of another local K-9, Leni, from the Gresham Police Department earlier in the week. Two Portland officers and two personnel from other agencies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave, and the Portland Police Bureau will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
