Portland schools' back-to-school video starring drag artist sparks conservative backlash

Portland Public Schools launched its 2026-27 academic year with a Facebook video that opened with drag performer Poison Waters, introduced as an advocate, educator and host, delivering a thank-you to teachers, principals and staff. The clip also featured statements from Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Maxine Dexter. Conservative commentators, including Heritage Foundation education fellow Corey DeAngelis, superintendent hopeful Sonja Shaw, and Moms for Liberty leader Tina Descovich, condemned the district for “promoting gender ideology” and using “adult entertainment” in schools.

Their remarks framed the video as a push for school choice and a challenge to parental authority. The controversy follows a lawsuit filed by Portland mother Allison Roberts, who alleges retaliation for opposing gender-identity curriculum and a Pride flag. Neither the district, Waters nor Dexter’s office have replied to inquiries. The episode highlights ongoing cultural battles over curriculum and representation in public education.
