Portugal braces for rapid cooling and early autumn rains this week
Temperatures across Portugal are set to fall sharply, with the north coast expected to lose up to 12 °C in two days, while rain chances rise later in the week.
Meteorologists explain that a cooling Atlantic front and a sea-breeze effect will cause temperatures to plunge dramatically, with the north coast experiencing up to a 12 °C fall within two days. Porto may go from above 34 °C to around 22 °C, while Viana do Castelo and Braga are also set for notable drops. Despite the cooling, interior regions such as Évora and Beja will remain hot, reaching the high 30s on Wednesday, the start of astronomical autumn.
From Sunday onward, the IPMA model shows a growing likelihood of precipitation across 18 continental capitals, with the strongest signals in the north and centre and notable chances in Lisbon, Alentejo, and the Algarve. Rain is not guaranteed everywhere, and consecutive rainy days are uncertain, but the overall pattern points to the end of one outlet heat wave and the arrival of wetter, cooler conditions.
