Portugal raises monthly elderly solidarity supplement to €720 starting 2027
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced that the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly will increase from €670 to €720 per month, effective 1 January 2027.
On International Day of Older Persons, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro disclosed that Portugal will raise the reference figure for its Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly from €670 to €720 per month, a €50 increase slated for 1 January 2027. The adjustment, part of the 2027 State Budget, seeks to improve the financial situation of vulnerable retirees and follows a pledge to reach a €870 reference level by 2029. The benefit is calculated as the gap between a beneficiary’s actual income and the €720 ceiling, and current recipients will see their payments updated automatically.
The programme now assists about 245,500 seniors, a significant jump from roughly 140,000 in spring 2024, driven by higher reference values and regulatory tweaks such as dropping the children-income exclusion. In addition to cash support, CSI beneficiaries enjoy reduced-price prescription medicines.
Why it matters
The increase boosts income for Portugal's low-earning seniors and expands coverage of a key social safety net.
