Portugal's August car registrations jump as EVs claim over a third of sales
In August 2026 Portugal registered 17,209 vehicles, a rise of 11.3% year-on-year, with electric cars accounting for 36.1% of the market.
Portugal's car market showed strong momentum in 2026, with 17,209 vehicles registered in August, an 11.3% increase over August 2025. Cumulative registrations from January through August reached 197,632, marking a 10.3% rise compared with the previous year. Light passenger vehicle registrations hit 169,323 units, up 9.5%, and monthly registrations of new light passenger cars rose 8.4% to 14,086.
Electric and hybrid cars now comprise 75.6% of newly registered light passenger vehicles, and pure electric models captured 36.1% of August sales, a 65.2% jump from August 2025.
