Portugal's car manufacturing output falls sharply in first nine months
Vehicle production in Portugal declined noticeably between January and September, with both passenger and commercial models seeing lower output.
According to data released by the Associação Automóvel de Portugal, car production in the country fell during the period from January through September, covering passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. Passenger car output decreased compared with the same period last year, as did the production of light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. Despite the downturn, the sector continues to be a key export driver, with almost all vehicles shipped abroad, primarily to European destinations such as Germany, France, Italy and Turkey.
In September, the decline was especially pronounced, with reduced numbers across all vehicle types. The association also noted a modest rise in the assembly of heavy passenger vehicles during the same timeframe.
Why it matters
The slump highlights challenges for Portugal's manufacturing sector and its reliance on export markets.
