Portugal's Prime Minister to Boost US Trade Ties During UN Visit
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will use his upcoming trip to New York for the UN General Assembly to strengthen economic and commercial links with the United States.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will travel to the United States next week to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly and to deepen the country’s economic partnership with Washington. On Tuesday, he is slated to ring the New York Stock Exchange closing bell, a ceremony the prime minister’s office says underscores Portugal’s strong fiscal performance, record employment and recent A+ rating upgrade by Fitch.
In 2025 the United States was Portugal’s fourth-largest goods market, representing 5.8% of exports (€4.6 billion) and 2.1% of imports (€2.4 billion), with a cumulative trade surplus of roughly €6 billion. Export growth to the US has averaged 15.4% per year since 2021, while imports have risen 5.0% annually. US direct investment reached €4.8 billion in 2025, up 15.9% from the previous year, placing the US seventh among Portugal’s investors. Montenegro will also visit a Portuguese filigree store in Times Square and hold bilateral talks, preparing for Portugal’s upcoming non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2027-28.
