Portugal's public finances show a €249.3 million surplus, down sharply from last year

The Portuguese state posted a €249.3 million surplus up to August, a drop of €1.799 billion compared with the same period last year.

According to the latest budget execution report released on 30 September, Portugal’s overall public-sector surplus fell to €249.3 million through August. This represents a reduction of €1.799 billion versus the previous year’s figure. The decline is largely attributed to a lower balance in the Central Administration, which fell by €2.864 billion (or €1.618 billion excluding SNS debt-regularisation payments).
