Portugal says fuel reserves are healthy amid French shortages

At a ceremony marking a protocol with the Câmara Municipal de Almada and EPAL, Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho affirmed that Portugal’s fuel reserves are solid, with 92 days of liquid fuels on hand, above the 90-day target. Jet-fuel consumption rose 3% through August, yet reserves grew by 18%. She noted that Portugal’s suppliers - Brazil, Nigeria, Algeria and the United States - remain reliable and outside any instability zones.

While keeping an eye on the French fuel crunch, Carvalho called for reduced personal fossil-fuel consumption, recommending lower speeds and car-pooling. She also referenced a strategy to cut fossil-fuel use by 50% by 2034, expanding renewables and domestic renewable fuels to improve energy security and competitiveness.
