Portugal’s Strong Fiscal Outlook Keeps Investors Confident Despite Rising Bond Yields
Portugal stays attractive for investors as solid public finances, robust growth and a falling debt-to-GDP ratio offset higher sovereign bond rates, according to Florian Späete of Generali Investments.
Florian Späete, senior bond strategist at Generali Investments, explains that Portugal continues to inspire investor confidence even as government-bond yields have risen. The spread between 10-year Portuguese bonds and benchmark German Bunds widened by about 40 basis points, reaching over 50 basis points, but the increase has been milder than in countries like Italy. Portugal benefits from strong economic growth, a reduced budget deficit and recent fiscal surpluses, which together improve its credit rating and financial credibility.
Analysts also expect the public-debt-to-GDP ratio to keep falling in the coming years. These fundamentals have drawn foreign capital, enhancing market liquidity and sustaining demand for Portuguese sovereign debt despite broader European market instability.
Why it matters
Portugal’s fiscal strength continues to attract foreign capital, affecting European bond markets and investor risk assessments.
