Portuguese navy expands search area for missing crew member off Sesimbra
Authorities restarted the search this morning, extending the operational zone after the Friday wreck off Sesimbra, Setúbal district. The navy deployed the frigates NRP Figueira da Foz and NRP Sagitário, along with a hydrographic institute vessel equipped with multibeam side-scan sonar. Coordination is handled by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Lisbon. Six survivors were rescued on Friday, five with minor injuries and one seriously injured, while one person remains missing.
Following the Friday sinking of a boat near Sesimbra in the Setúbal district, the Portuguese navy has renewed its efforts to locate a missing crew member, expanding the search perimeter. The operation involves the navy ships NRP Figueira da Foz and NRP Sagitário, supported by a vessel from the Instituto Hidrográfico that uses a multibeam side-scan sonar system. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Lisbon oversees the mission.
Earlier, a nearby fishing vessel, Sebastião Paulo, reported the incident at 10:25 and rescued six people, five with light injuries and one with a serious wound. According to the rescued crew, the missing individual disappeared at the moment the vessel went down. The search continues with the enlarged area.
