Posco's employee-driven foundation funds advanced prosthetics and hands-on science education

Posco’s 1% Sharing Foundation is providing robotic prosthetic devices to injured veterans and delivering project-based science programs to middle-school students in its host regions.

The Posco 1% Sharing Foundation, created in 2013 from voluntary employee contributions, supports injured veterans and first responders with advanced robotic prosthetics and mobility devices, having assisted 219 recipients and allocated roughly 6 billion won over six years. Recipients such as Choo Yeon-hee and Kim Geun-hyo have regained mobility and returned to work or sport after receiving the devices. The foundation also supplies wearable rehabilitation robots to veteran hospitals in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Incheon, and helps beneficiaries find employment, including positions at Posco Humans.

Parallel to the veterans program, the SangSang Science initiative, launched in 2019, offers four-day, hands-on curricula to first-year middle-schoolers in Pohang, Gwangyang and other cities, emphasizing low-carbon steel production and related technologies. To date the program has engaged 26,301 students across 201 schools, and a 2023 agreement with the Education Ministry will extend it to an additional 9,240 students at 90 schools nationwide, including new sites in Songdo, Incheon. The foundation’s efforts were recognized with the Patriots and Veterans Culture Award in 2024.

Why it matters
