Post Office cash deposits surge as shoppers save early for Christmas
The Post Office processed over 17 million personal cash deposits from July to September, a rise of 7% year-on-year and 3% versus the previous quarter.
Between July and September, the Post Office handled upwards of 17 million personal cash deposit transactions, marking a 7% increase over the previous year and a 3% rise from the preceding quarter. Ben Hunter Woollard, head of banking at the Post Office, said the trend reflects households preparing for a costlier festive period and using cash to manage specific expenses. A Censuswide poll of 2,000 people across the UK in October revealed that 54% are saving for Christmas earlier than they normally would, with 38% starting to consider holiday budgets during the summer months.
Ying Shi, postmaster at Caterham Post Office, noted a rise in customers setting aside funds for gifts, celebrations, and household costs. The Post Office’s agreement with many banks allows these cash deposits to serve as a convenient budgeting tool for many shoppers.
Why it matters
Early cash savings indicate households are tightening budgets ahead of higher holiday spending.
