PostNL seeks extra government funding to offset rising delivery costs
PostNL has asked the Dutch cabinet for additional financial support, citing increasing expenses as mail volumes fall while it remains legally required to deliver letters.
PostNL has formally requested extra subsidies from the Dutch government, saying that fewer letters and parcels are being sent while the company must still meet statutory delivery obligations. The firm highlighted that the existing regulations, dating back to 2009, no longer reflect the transformed postal market, and it called for swift implementation of the Post Law that has been pending in the Tweede Kamer since 2020.
Earlier funding appeals for one outlet and previous year were rejected, and a court case concerning those applications is ongoing. To cut costs, PostNL recently extended the standard delivery window from one to two days, and the proposed law would allow a maximum of three days for letters and cards. Looking ahead, the company plans to further scale back services, including ending Saturday deliveries.
Why it matters
Government funding decisions will shape the affordability and reliability of mail services for Dutch citizens and businesses.
