Power failure cuts electricity to eastern Cuba amid ongoing energy crisis

A line fault between Nuevitas and Las Tunas caused a partial blackout in eastern Cuba, worsening the island's long-standing power shortages.

Cuba's state electricity provider said a fault on a line between the town of Nuevitas and Las Tunas province caused a partial shutdown of the national grid in the eastern region. This interruption joins a pattern of recurrent power cuts that have forced residents to endure long daily load-shedding, affecting water distribution and telecommunications. The island's aging thermal power stations frequently break down, and a U.S. oil embargo imposed nine months ago has constrained fuel supplies needed for emergency generators.

Since the start of the year, the country has experienced several total blackouts, highlighting the fragility of its power system. In response, the government has pursued a large-scale solar park program with support from China, raising renewable sources to roughly 21 % of its energy portfolio. Officials warn that fuel shortages make the grid more vulnerable to future failures.

Why it matters

The outage highlights Cuba's deepening energy shortage and its reliance on foreign aid amid U.S. sanctions.
