PP shares old video of Óscar Puente's knee injury to mock him ahead of campaign

The Partido Popular posted a three-year-old clip of minister Óscar Puente’s knee injury, adding a taunting caption as the election season begins.

In a late-night tweet on October 5, the Partido Popular shared a three-year-old video of minister Óscar Puente falling during a site visit in Valladolid, where he later disclosed a quadriceps rupture in his right leg. The party added the caption “Miedo le tenías a tu esguince,” ridiculing the injury as the country heads toward elections. The clip, first spread by the ultra-right outlet Estado de Alarma (now EdaTV), has already been viewed by more than a million users.

The move provoked a swift rebuke from PSOE, which labeled the PP’s tactic as miserably petty. Puente himself replied early Tuesday, calling the PP “the worst gentuza” and emphasizing that his injury occurred while working. Right-wing YouTubers and agitators praised the PP’s approach, further inflaming the partisan atmosphere on social media.

Why it matters

The incident shows how Spanish parties are using personal injuries to fuel polarising election rhetoric on social media.
