PP’s pre-campaign stumbles over pensions, housing and vote-by-mail claims

Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s opening pre-election rally sparked controversies over pension indexing, housing promises and allegations about mail-in voting.

At the PP’s kickoff rally in Madrid, Feijóo promised a calm yet decisive change, but the event quickly gave rise to rumors of drug-dealer contracts and vote-by-mail manipulation. He warned that his government would demand sacrifices, a line that revived memories of past austerity cuts. The pension issue dominated the week, as Feijóo asserted that the party would guarantee pension updates according to the consumer-price index, contradicting a 2021 vote against such indexing.

His comment that young people deserve a viable public pension sparked a backlash from campaign spokeswoman Ester Muñoz, who warned of a future “breakdown” of the system. Treasury deputy Juan Bravo attempted to quell the dispute by confirming public pensions, indexation, and a promise of future reforms contingent on a suitable economy. Parallel to the pension debate, the PP kept the vote-by-mail controversy alive, with Isabel Díaz Ayuso alleging past electoral fraud and warning of potential manipulation in upcoming elections.
